Dr Baker

Dr Baker from OSU provided a
very informative discussion on soil, forage, grasses and pasture maintenance.

Dr Baker provided several good references for soil
and pasture research. Some key
 websites that we should use
for pasture questions include:

Thanks to the animal and herdsire auctions and a huge flurry of late registrations, AlpacaFest generated a positive cash flow. We currently have $140K in the treasury.  Since we have projected sufficient operating funds, we do not intend to repeat the alpaca auction, but AlpacaFest 2010 will have high quality Herdsire breeding auction. Stay tuned for further AlpacaFest details.

Fiber Day at the next OABA Meeting:

The next quarterly meeting will be in early June (tentatively scheduled for June 5th).  Since this is so close to shearing, we are looking to hold a full day of fiber educational seminars focusing on skirting for fleece shows.  We intend to have multiple skirting tables set up for fleece preparation.   Any OABA member bringing a fleece for skirting to the demonstration will receive an early-bird fleece show registration discount for AlpacaFest.  Watch your e-mail for further details.

AlpacaFest : Will be held 5-7 November, 2010.We still have not confirmed our venue site  for AlpacaFest.  However, we have narrowed it down to two possibilities and are in the final stages of negotiations to get the best possible price and service value for our money.  We are  totally committed to restoring the blanket fleece portion of show.

OABA Membership, and Website Update

Membership Drive:  OABA memberships are down over 55% from last year.  Therefore we are actively campaigning for membership renewals.   Our goal is to reach out and contact every farm in Ohio over the next 30 days.  The good news for all current OABA members is that we are changing our OABA membership year to run from June to June instead of January.  So if you have renewed you membership at or since AlpacaFest your current membership is now valid until June 1, 2011.

Website:  The website is undergoing a transformation to better serve OABA members.  We are updating the website on a frequent basis. Over the next few months, the website will have an entirely new look.  Additionally, the farm locator is being revamped so it works with Google. Make sure you take full advantage of the Herdsire and classified listings! Be sure that you also logon and review your farm information to be sure that it is up to date.

The members of the OABA Board wish to thank you for your continued membership.  Without you there is no OABA or voice for the Ohio alpaca owners.

Sincerely,

Jeff Bradford
